The Committee

  • President – Amy Burton

I am delighted to be BCASS President for 2016/17 having previously been a committee member and Chair of the committee in my student days. As President I’m looking forward to getting to know the committee, supporting them through the year and particularly to building links with the BANG (Birmingham Accountant’s Networking Group) and BWMSCA (Birmingham and West Midlands Society of Chartered Accountant’s) committees which I am also part of.

I am currently an Associate Director in the tax team at RSM, having joined in 2006 as a graduate. When outside of work, I am a big sports fan regularly watching football, rugby league and cricket. This year I am going to my first live F1 in Belgium. I am also part of the regional RSM ladies 5-a-side football team which have recently won the RSM UK tournament – if you see me at a BCASS event I am likely to be showing everyone a photo of our trophy!

  • Chair – Stephanie Mersh

I’ve been at RSM for four years where I qualified in Audit and then moved across to the accounts preparation team. I work on a range of clients but specialise in the Charity and Education Sectors. I heard about BCASS from a colleague and former Chair of the committee who took me to a meeting and I became hooked. It has been a great opportunity to meet people from other firms and attend interesting events. Some of my best friends and contacts have come from my time on BCASS and it has presented me with some amazing opportunities. When I’m not attending BCASS events I enjoy following the F1, Travelling and attending other networking events. I have recently joined the BWMSCA Committee in the hope that we can improve links between them and BCASS to provide support to ICAEW members throughout their whole career. This is my 3rd and final year with the committee and as Chair and I hope it will be the best one yet.

  • Vice-Chair – David Sherwood

I am an assistant manager in the Restructuring team at KPMG, having moved over from Dains Accountants after three years.  I joined BCASS in Autumn 2013, just a couple of months into my training contract, as I had heard it was a great way to make new friends and have free drinks!  I took over as Secretary in 2015 and was then elected Vice-Chair in July 2016.  During my time on the committee I’ve met some close friends and professional contacts, been to countless great events, and have indeed been bought more free drinks than I’d care to remember!  I would encourage anyone to get involved in the society and to come along to our events, and am more than happy to have a chat with anyone who would like to know more.

Outside of work I’m a huge foodie and enjoy a range of outdoor activities.  If I’m not on top of a mountain or eating I can usually be found propping up a bar somewhere or watching a box set.

  • Treasurer – Matt Christopher

    Moore Stephens

I originally joined BCASS in April 2015 as a firm representative when the committee was looking increase participation from middle tier firms.

Since then, I have met numerous people from various firms and roles (many I can now call friends) and participate in many different activities that would not have been available had I not got involved with BCASS. It’s perfect for anyone moving to a new city or beginning a career as an accountant to make connections and have fun at the same time.

By becoming the new Treasurer, I wanted to combine my knowledge gained the through work whilst continuing to get involved with future BCASS events.
